Junk Kouture

One of my favourite projects that I have done in TY has been Junk Kouture.I was a very time consuming project but I enjoyed every minute of it!Our task was to create an outfit using all recyclable materials. The hardest part was deciding what to use;my team and I decided on things to do with music.
For the Junk Koture Project 2013 my team and I designed a dress and accessories to fit our theme; which was music. To create our outfit we used old cassette tapes, sheets of music, wires, earphones, cardboard, scratched CDs, leggings, a pair of old converse and an Xbox headset. Our design was inspired by many famous singers and songwriters in the world today. By cutting, gluing, sticking and sewing recyclables materials to do with music we were able to create something very unique, individual and different.
To make our outfit we had to design it on paper first and then collect all of the materials we needed. We collected old and scratched CDs for our friends and family; and old cassette tapes from our grandparents. We got our Xbox headset from a member of our team’s brother and we collect earphones and old wires from people in our school.
We used chicken wire for the base of our dress and then covered the wire with newspaper to make it strong and then covered the newspaper with old sheets of music, from old music exam papers.
After adding the sheets of music we started to work on the skirt of the dress. We cut the chicken wire into the correct shape we wanted and used old wire hangers to hold the skirt in place. Then we covered the wire with old cardboard CD cases and cardboard. When the cardboard was secure we stuck 5 CDs together and attached them to the skirt in vertical lines. When all the CDs were secured onto the cardboard, we used the inside of old cassette tapes to fill in the gaps between the lines of CDs. Then with some more old and scratched CDs we cut music note shapes and painted them black and white; and stuck them onto the CDs on the skirt.
For the top of our dress we smashed scratched CDs into small pieces and stuck them onto the sheets of music using a hot glue gun. Then we stuck a CD and old earphones that didn’t work anymore onto the front of our dress.
After taking out the insides of the tapes we used a ribbon to string the tape cases together to make a belt.
Then we made a small hat out of a cereal box and covered it in sheets of music to match the top of our dress. Next we painted the Xbox headset black and white, and stuck the hat onto it using masking tape. Then we plaited wires and old earphones together and wrapped them around the hat.

For our shoes we got an old pair of Converse that had holes in them and covered them in masking tape and painted them black; and used old wires from chargers to lace them up.
To make our gloves we cut the ends off leggings that had holes in them and used a sewing machine to sew black and white ribbon onto them to match our dress.
